Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy
I am currently an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Oregon, where I work on transient radio signals from space- that is, things that change over time instead of being constant. In practice, this involves radio signals from the biggest explosions in the universe, from exploding stars to black holes that rip apart stars! I also am active in outreach- in particular, many know me for my “astronomer here!” comments as /u/Andromeda321 on Reddit, my role as the astronomy consultant for the Guinness Book of World Records, or various media appearances.
My research
My research is in radio astronomy, where I look for changing signals from different astronomical phenomena- usually gigantic space explosions! You can learn more about my research interests on the “research” page.
Writing about science
Besides looking for transient signals, I also do some freelance science writing in several places. These have included Scientific American, Astronomy, Discover, and others! I have also written the astronomy section in the 2023 edition of Guinness Book of World Records!
